Johor cops nab eight for driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs

JOHOR BARU: Eight people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol during a roadblock in Jalan Daya and Jalam Mutiara Emas Utama, here.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the operation was carried out under “Ops Mabuk” on Tuesday (Nov 26) between 1am and 5am.

“Six individuals were arrested under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol, with recorded alcohol levels exceeding legal limits.

“All suspects were released on police bail and will be summoned to the Johor Baru Magistrate’s Court on a designated date.

"While two individuals were detained under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for reckless driving against the traffic flow and testing positive for drugs,” he said in a statement.

He added that both suspects are in custody for further action.

ACP Raub also said that the operation was aimed to combat traffic offences, particularly driving under the influence of alcohol, and to enhance road safety.

“During the operation, a total of 116 individuals, comprising 98 men and 18 women aged between 18 and 65 and from various ethnic backgrounds, were inspected.

“Additionally, 97 vehicles were checked, including 74 cars, 15 motorcycles, and eight other types of vehicles.

“A total of 40 summonses were issued for 67 offences, including driving without a license, running red lights, non-compliant license plates, modified exhaust systems, and failing to wear seat belts,” he said.

Driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving against traffic, or driving under the influence of drugs not only breaches the law but also endangers the lives of both the driver and other road users, he said.

“We would like to urge all road users to abide by traffic regulations to ensure collective road safety,” he added.
