Man caught on CCTV trying to pass off fake ringgit gets two years in jail


KUALA PILAH: A 26-year-old man who was captured in a clip using a counterfeit RM100 note at a business outlet here was sentenced to serve two years in jail by a Magistrate's Court here.

Unemployed Muhammad Syafiq Abdullah had earlier pleaded guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Saiful Sayoti.

The accused was charged with having a RM100 note which he knew was a counterfeit in his possession and that he had intended to use it as a genuine one.

He committed the offence with another individual who is still at large at around 2pm on Nov 17 at a business outlet here.

The accused was charged under Section 489C of the Penal Code read together with section 34 of the same legislation which carries a jail term of up to 10 years upon conviction.

Magistrate Saiful said he had to consider public interest when sentencing the accused.

"This case involves the use of counterfeit currency and this is a serious offence," he said.

Muhammad Syafiq, who was represented by counsel from the Legal Aid Department pleaded for a lenient sentence as he had to provide for his four children including one with special needs.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Farahana Athirah Yaccob asked for a punishment which was commensurate the offence.

Prior to this, Kuala Pilah police chief Supt Amran Abd Gani had said that the accused was caught in Senawang on Nov 22 after a clip of him using the fake bill at the business outlet went viral.
