Floods: Elderly motorist drowns in Kapit

SIBU: Flooding in Kapit claimed a life when an elderly man drowned on Wednesday (Nov 27).

The victim was identified as Bangau Amping,75.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said in its daily update the Kapit station received a distress call at 7.15am about a car that plunged into a large drain behind the Kapit Foochow Association multipurpose hall.

The department said the strong current made rescue efforts difficult.

"The victim was trapped inside his car. Our team had to break the windows and use a rope to lift him to the roadside," it added.

The victim, who was the only one in the car, showed no signs of life when rescued, it said.

The man's body has been taken to Hospital Kapit for a post-mortem.

Kapit town has been hit by flash floods after incessant rain since Monday (Nov 25).
