Man gets two years for using fake RM100 note

KUALA PILAH: A jobless man who was captured on video using a counterfeit RM100 note at a business outlet has been sentenced to two years’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here.

Muhammad Syafiq Abdullah, 26, had earlier pleaded guilty after the charge was read to him before Magistrate Saiful Sayoti.

The accused was charged with possessing a RM100 note that he knew was a fake one and intending to use it as genuine tender.

He committed the offence with another person, who is still at large, at around 2pm on Nov 17 at a business outlet here.

The accused was charged under Section 489C of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same legislation, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years upon conviction.

Saiful said he had to consider public interest when sentencing the accused.

Muhammad Syafiq, who was represented by counsel from the Legal Aid Department, pleaded for a lenient sentence as he had to provide for his four children, including one with special needs.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nurul Farahana Athirah Yaccob requested an appropriate punishment to go with the offence.
