MPs want harsher penalties on overloaded heavy vehicles

KUALA LUMPUR: Lawmakers are calling for stricter action against overloaded heavy vehicles.

During the Budget 2025 debate, Mohd Nazri Abu Hassan (PN-Merbok) asked if the Transport Ministry is looking at revising the Road Transport Act 1987.

"This is to ensure stricter action, especially when there are accidents involving heavy vehicles carrying more than the allowed weight," he said on Wednesday (Nov 27).

He also asked about the number of company and trade licences that have been suspended because of road accidents.

He also requested an update on the High Speed-Weigh in Motion (HS-WIM) system to track the weight of vehicles on the road.

"What is the ministry's latest plan for HS-WIM to reduce the risk of accidents and overcome the problem of road damage caused by heavy vehicles or commercial vehicles?" he said.

Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi) echoed similar concerns during his debate and asked if the ministry is taking safety measures to ensure that heavy vehicles such as lorries and trailers do not harm other road users.

He noted the recent tragic accidents involving container and trailer lorries that caused the loss of lives.

"I also want to know what action is taken against companies that own heavy vehicles involved in accidents," he said.

He suggested that action can also be taken against transport companies if they neglect to inspect their heavy vehicles.
