Python captured in viral video one of the largest in Larut Matang Selama


TAIPING: A python, whose capture went viral on social media, is among the longest ever captured by the Civil Defence Force in the district.

The Larut Matang Selama District Civil Defence officer, Faizulhalimi Mohd Yunus said the reptile was estimated to be over five metres long and weighed around 80kg.

"The team had to break the ceiling in the living room of the house to allow the snake to come out before capturing it.

"Although the snake was physically large and long, it was not aggressive; it only wanted to escape," he said on Wednesday (Nov 27).

It was reported on Tuesday (Nov 26) that according to a Facebook post by the Taiping local council, a seven-member team was dispatched to the house at Jalan Ayer Puteh in Kg Dew in Kamunting at 8pm Monday (Nov 25) to catch the snake.

A video clip uploaded on Facebook showed the snake dangling from a hole in the ceiling of the house in Kampung Dew near Kamunting here and onto the sofa.

The post has since been shared 2,300 times and attracted over 500 comments from netizens, who shared similar experiences.

The animal, he was, was believed to have slithered in from a nearby oil palm plantation before hiding in the ceiling of the house.

He said the presence of the reptile around the house area had been detected a day before the incident but it was not found during the initial search operation.

"The operation on Monday was successfully carried out without any injuries. The snake will be handed over to the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) for further action.

"It is likely that the animal left its original habitat in search of a cooler place," he said.
