Ex-serviceman jailed for assaulting girlfriend


KOTA KINABALU: An army pensioner was sentenced to 12 months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (Nov) 27, for assaulting his girlfriend.

Ephraim Julius pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to voluntarily causing hurt to the 52-year-old woman.

The incident happened in a rented room in Inanam Town at 2am on Oct 3. Acting on a report, police arrested Ephraim later that day at 7.30pm.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

The court ordered Ephraim to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest.

In a separate case, a 39-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison and two strokes of the cane for assaulting and robbing a China tourist.

Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan handed down the sentence to Arnajib Yusof after he pleaded guilty to the charge of attacking Shuk Han Lo, 52, punching him in the face and robbing him at 8.50pm on Nov 1 behind a bus stop along Jalan Coastal, here.

Amir allowed Arnajib to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Shafeerah Mad Iskim prosecuted and Arnajib was unrepresented.
