KUALA LUMPUR: A mother was sentenced to one month’s jail by the Ampang Sessions Court here after she pleaded guilty to neglecting her two sons by leaving them unsupervised at home last month.
Judge Norshila Kamaruddin yesterday ordered the 41-year-old masseuse to serve her sentence from the date of arrest.
The woman was charged with neglecting her six-year-old son and a 14-month-old infant at an apartment in Taman Kosas, Ampang, at 7.27pm on Oct 7.
The offence, under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, a maximum fine of RM50,000, or both upon conviction.
According to case details, investigations revealed that the mother had been absent for two days, leaving the children without supervision.
Bernama reported that firefighters had to forcefully open the door to rescue the boys.
The woman, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lighter sentence, citing her financial struggles and responsibility as the family’s sole provider.
Separately, the sister of the man who attacked the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor, resulting in the deaths of two police officers and the injury of another, pleaded not guilty at the High Court to charges of failing to report violent ideology.
Mariah Radin Imran, 19, a kuih seller, made the plea yesterday after the charges were read out before judge K. Muniandy, who set Jan 9, 2025, for case management.
She is accused of intentionally failing to provide any information related to crimes linked to violent ideology at a house in Kampung Sungai Tiram, Johor Baru, between April 2017 and May 17 this year.
The charge under Section 130M of the Penal Code carries a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
