Nilai woman loses RM210,000 to scammer

NILAI: A woman who was planning to buy a shoplot here has been cheated out of almost RM210,000.

Nilai police chief Supt Abdul Malik Hasim in a statement said that the victim, who is an account officer, lodged a report on Sunday.

“The victim planned to buy a shoplot worth RM158,000 and wanted to apply for a bank loan.

“An individual claiming to be an agent for a bank then contacted the victim and promised to expedite the loan process,” he said.

Supt Abdul Malek said the woman was asked to make some payments to process her application.

He said from December 2023 to October this year, the victim paid almost RM210,000 in multiple transactions.

“The victim eventually decided to check the status of her application with the bank but was told none had been submitted.

“Only then did she realise she had been scammed,” he said.

The case is being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Supt Abdul Malek advised the public to check with authorities or financial institutions before dealing with agents.
