Azmin Ali is Perikatan’s new sec-gen, says Hamzah

SHAH ALAM: Datuk Seri Azmin Ali is set to be appointed as the new secretary-general of Perikatan Nasional, with his position expected to be formally endorsed during the coalition’s Supreme Council meeting on Dec 9.

Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin confirmed that Perikatan chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had proposed Azmin for the role.

“According to the constitution, the chairman has the authority to appoint the secretary-general.

“When the chairman announced that he wanted Datuk Seri Azmin Ali as secretary-general, it will be formalised at the Supreme Council meeting,” Hamzah said during a press conference at Ideal Convention Centre here on Friday (Nov 29).

On rumours of divisions within Bersatu, Hamzah dismissed such claims, attributing them to the natural dynamics of a large party.

“This is normal. If we had only five or six members, it would be easy. But because we have millions of members - when combined with PAS - it’s inevitable.

“During our last Supreme Council meeting, we embraced each other. Even those who lost are still here,” he said.

He explained that internal competition during elections is part of the process.

“Everyone wants to show they are capable, but it doesn’t mean the party is fractured,” Hamzah added.
