SHAH ALAM: No external injuries were found on the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) student who died while undergoing reserve officer training at its Shah Alam campus.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the victim had died of heat stroke with multiple organ failure.
“The incident has been classified as sudden death,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Comm Hussein said the victim’s father was informed that his son had fallen unconscious during a marching exercise and he was sent to Shah Alam Hospital for treatment on Nov 10.
The exercise was conducted by the Public University Reserve Officer Training Unit (Palapes).
“Initial investigation revealed that the student had joined Palapes at UiTM Shah Alam in late October and was undergoing a fitness test before the start of basic training next year.
“On the day of the incident, the student was punished by his trainer for lagging behind during a running session. He was instructed to do push-ups.
“Soon after, he fell unconscious,” he said.
While receiving treatment in the hospital’s emergency ward, the student was in a semi-conscious state and had a high fever, Comm Hussein said.
“Efforts were made to hydrate him but had no positive result.
“The student was also suffering from cramps and given further treatment before being admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
“The victim passed away on Nov 13,” he said.
Police have recorded the statements of nine witnesses, including the victim’s father, who lodged a police report on Nov 15, he added.
Comm Hussein urged those with information to contact the assistant investigating officer Asst Supt Mohd Khairi Kamaruddin at 012-266 6025.
Previously, the Armed Forces issued a statement that it was investigating a report lodged by a man who alleged that the death of his son during training at a public university was linked to bullying.
