Flood victims in Kedah and Perlis continue to increase, relief centres see rising numbers


ALOR SETAR: The number of flood victims across six districts in Kedah continues to rise, with 7,911 people now housed in 50 temporary relief centres as of 8am on Saturday (Nov 30).

Deputy director of the State Civil Defence Force, Major Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain, said Kubang Pasu recorded the highest number of evacuees, with 2,570 individuals from 813 families accommodated at 15 centres.

“This is followed by Kota Setar with 2,294 people from 679 families in 10 centres, Padang Terap with 1,298 individuals from 386 families in 11 relief centres, Sik with 986 victims from 313 families in eight relief centres, and Pokok Sena with 585 victims from 177 families in four relief centres,” he said.

The Kuala Muda district reported the lowest number of evacuees, with only 178 individuals from 52 families seeking refuge at two centres.

Muhammad Suhaimi added that as of 8pm on Friday (Nov 29), eight locations near Sungai Kedah indicated dangerously high water levels.

In Perlis, approximately 520 evacuees from 149 families have been relocated to four relief centres as of 10am on Saturday (Nov 30).

According to a Perlis Civil Defence Force spokesperson, some of the worst-affected areas in the state include Kampung Rambai, Kampung Banggol Desa, Kuala Tunggang, and Kampung Alor Setar in Arau, where 245 individuals are being housed at Sekolah Kebangsaan Guar Nangka and Sekolah Kebangsaan Arau.

Other relief centres opened include Sekolah Kebangsaan Tinggi in Padang Besar and Dewan Warisan in Kangar.
