JITRA: A newlywed couple were looking forward to their wedding feast (kenduri) but the venue for their reception in Titi Besi, Kepala Batas here was hit by floods.
The couple, Mohamed Khairie Mohamed Kamal, 28, and Nur Izzatul Asma Mustafa, 22, had to downsize the guest list and change the venue to the bride's grandfather's house in Kampung Hutan Kandis, Alor Setar at the last minute.
However, Nur Izzatul said they had catered for 1,200 wedding guests and all the food had to be packed and distributed to friends and family as well as to tahfiz centres and the public.
"It is indeed sad – we had to hold the wedding yesterday and by the reception today surrounded by floods," she said while distributing food and souvenirs to the public in Kepala Batas town here on Saturday (Nov 30).
"I am grateful to guests, especially friends and family, who attended the wedding ceremony yesterday, even though they had to take boats or use four-wheel drive vehicles."
Nur Izzatul, a clerk, said the wedding ceremony was planned in May and she incurred costs of about RM20,000 for various expenses, including her wedding dress.
Although saddened by the circumstances, Nur Izzatul said she and her husband still consider their wedding day as a landmark event in their future life together.
"We celebrated our wedding by taking photographs in our wedding outfits and even took a boat as well as four-wheel drive against the backdrop of the floods," she said.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Khairie, a salesman, said only three of his family members from Simpang Kuala, Alor Setar could attend the wedding reception as many roads were cut off due to floods.
"Usually, I only see such things happening on television and social media. However, we have accepted this as we are unable to do anything else," said Mohamed Khairie. – Bernama
