PETALING JAYA: A survivor of the landslide tragedy in Kampung Bukit Apit, Ajil, recounted the harrowing moments as he tried to save his younger sister before losing consciousness.

Uzair Azman, 17, said he heard screams and saw one of his sisters trapped beneath the rubble, crying in pain.

According to him, his brother, Abdul Raziq Azman, 18, managed to escape from the room and cried for help.

"At the time of the incident, I was at a neighbour’s house but was suddenly startled by the sound of a landslide, followed by cries for help.

"I rushed home and ran into the house to save my siblings, but unfortunately, I couldn’t.

"While trying to clear the rubble, I suddenly lost consciousness and only woke up later in the hospital," he said when met by Sinar Harian at the Kampung Panggong Cemetery, Ajil, on Saturday (Nov 30).

He added that the landslide occurred twice in quick succession, causing one of his siblings to disappear from view.

"In the chaos, I heard my siblings screaming. I also saw one of them briefly before they were completely buried under a second massive landslide," he said.

Uzair, the fourth of seven siblings, was rushed to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu and was discharged at 11pm on Friday (Nov 29).

He shared that their mother, Ruziah Fuad, 46, was not at home during the incident.

Meanwhile, their eldest brother, Aminuddin Azman, 25, expressed his shock and grief but accepted the tragedy with resignation.

"My mother and younger brother (Abdul Raziq) are traumatised and deeply saddened by what happened.

"This tragedy has profoundly affected our mother. All I can do is pray that she and my brother regain their strength," said Aminuddin, whose father, Azman Ab Latif, 50, had passed away from a stroke and heart disease.

Since their father's passing, their mother has taken on the role of head of the family, earning a living by selling traditional cakes.

"The house we were living in was rented just a year ago. We previously rented another house. As for me, I live separately in the same village as I’m already married," he added.

Earlier, it was reported that three individuals were buried in the landslide at Kampung Bukit Apit around 4.30pm on Friday.

The first victim, Uzair Azman, 17, was found alive under a collapsed concrete wall in the living room at 5.17pm.

The body of Puteri Sajidah was found at 6.32pm, while her sister, Siti Fatimah, was discovered at 6.59pm, buried beneath the rubble.
