Ejected Umno members may return If earnest, says Zahid

SHAH ALAM: Expelled Umno members may have the opportunity to rejoin the party if they demonstrate genuine commitment to returning, says party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He noted that the Umno Supreme Council recently reinstated former Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, setting a precedent for others who wish to follow suit.

Speaking after launching the Selangor Barisan Nasional annual convention on Sunday (Dec 1), Ahmad Zahid highlighted Tajuddin’s determination to rejoin Umno.

“He submitted four appeal letters, campaigned for Umno in the Nenggiri and Mahkota by-elections, and attended the Umno general assembly,” said Ahmad Zahid.

Acknowledging Tajuddin’s persistence, Ahmad Zahid expressed confidence that the Supreme Council would accept similar appeals from other former members.

“If others show the same level of commitment as Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, I don’t see why the Supreme Council cannot make the same decision,” he added.

The Supreme Council recently lifted Tajuddin’s six-year suspension and reinstated him with immediate effect. Tajuddin was suspended in 2022 for actions deemed contrary to the party’s interests.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed Tajuddin’s reinstatement last week.
