Mechanism needed to ease financial burden of flood victims, says Bersatu Srikandi chief

SHAH ALAM: There must be a mechanism to provide temporary payment deferment for flood victims, says Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

The Bersatu Srikandi chief urged the government to collaborate with banks and agencies under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry and Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry to provide such assistance.

Mas Ermieyati suggested that payment for taxes and loan repayments be postponed to ease the financial burden of those affected by the devastating floods.

“We must persuade or negotiate with banks and agencies under the ministry for the Entrepreneur Development Ministry to offer temporary payment deferrals for flood victims, whether it’s for taxes or loans,” she said in her winding-up speech at the Bersatu annual general meeting, held at the Ideal Convention Centre on Sunday (Dec 1).

Praising Maybank’s recent announcement to provide relief measures, she added that it was a positive step and called on the government to implement similar measures.

“It’s a good step, but we need the government to take similar actions on a broader scale.

“Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, doesn’t just excel in other areas; this is a matter that requires urgent attention,” she said.

She emphasised the dire situation faced by flood victims, who have lost their belongings and are under immense stress.

“Flood victims are suffering and feeling immense pressure. All their possessions have been destroyed. Measures like payment deferment can provide them with some relief,” she said.

Mas Ermieyati urged the government to act swiftly, saying such initiatives would demonstrate genuine care for the plight of flood victims.

Earlier, Bersatu Armada chief Muhammad Hilman Idham in his winding-up speech called on party delegates to ensure victory at all of the party’s current parliamentary and state seats.

"We in Bersatu have 25 MPs and 58 state assemblymen – this is just Bersatu, not including Perikatan Nasional.

“To win in the upcoming election, firstly, these are the seats we must defend,” Hilman said.
