Snap polls next week if PM wants, says Mat Sabu

KUALA LUMPUR: A snap election could occur next week if Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim decides to dissolve Parliament, says Parti Amanah Nasional (Amanah) President Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.

He made this statement in response to Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Azmin Ali’s prediction that the Madani government might not complete its full term and would call for a snap election.

"I respect Azmin’s prediction, but I too have my own predictions. Should the PM decide to dissolve Parliament next week, there will be a snap poll then," said Mohamad in a joking manner.

Mohamad was speaking to the media after launching the Federal Territory Parti Amanah Nasional Convention in Sentul on Friday (Dec 1).

On Thursday (Nov 30), Azmin had urged delegates at Bersatu’s annual general meeting to prepare for the possibility of snap polls.

Azmin said it is not impossible for Parliament to be dissolved before its term ends in 2027.

"I believe with the pressure from the people today, Putrajaya will have no choice but to dissolve Parliament, and we are ready to face the general election," Azmin said.

The last general election was in 2022 and a full term in Malaysia lasts five years.
