Diplomas for retiring soldiers: A pathway to lucrative civilian careers

KUALA LUMPUR: Work-Based Learning (WBL) will help Armed Forces members that opt for early retirement to find more lucrative opportunities outside the service, says Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The program would assess eligible candidates at selected universities before granting them diplomas in their respective fields.

"Back in the day, to be a fighter jet pilot, the requirement was SPM, but when they left, they couldn't find jobs even though they held all the skills to be a fighter jet pilot because all they had was the SPM qualification," he said at an MOU signing at Wisma Perwira on Monday (Dec 2).

"They will assess in all aspects to see if their work is worth being given the diploma. The assessment period varies but the requirement is that the candidate must have at least 15 years work experience so these are not new soldiers but those that are nearer to the retirement age," he said.

He added that with the diplomas it would be easier for Armed Forces members who opt for early retirement to find a job.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the assessment would be made based on the scope from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.
