Floods: Smooth start on first day of SPM oral exam, says Fadhlina

PASIR MAS: The first day of the oral examination for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2024 proceeded smoothly in all flood-affected states including Kelantan, Terengganu, and Kedah, says Fadhlina Sidek.

The Education Minister said the task of relocating flood-affected SPM candidates was completed through Operation Payung on Sunday.

"The ministry is now entering the second phase, focusing on providing emotional support, reassurance and ensuring that the candidates are mentally prepared to tackle the examination," she said here on Monday (Dec 2).

In KUALA TERENGGANU, the SPM examination for flood-affected candidates proceeded smoothly despite some having to be relocated due to the disaster.

The Terengganu state Education Department director (JPNT), Jelani Sulong, said a total of 1,734 affected candidates successfully took the Malay Oral Test examination scheduled from Monday to Thursday.

Operation Payung was mobilised to enable them to sit for the examination based on the established standard operating procedures (SOP), he added.

"JPNT has activated Operation Payung to ensure the SPM examination starting today (Monday) proceeds smoothly.

"So far, we have identified a total of 1,734 SPM candidates from 20 schools in six affected districts due to the flood disaster," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian here today.

He said that 1,155 flood-affected candidates had been relocated to eight hostels, while 261 candidates that were previously relocated to temporary relief centres (PPS) had returned home as the flood situation gradually improved.

"We have executed detailed plans by providing transportation services to the flood-affected candidates overseen by the respective District Education Offices.

"All these candidates were transported to alternative examination centres via government agencies' vehicles such as the District Council, Fire and Rescue Department, Malaysian Civil Defence Force, Malaysian Armed Forces, and others," he added.

The number of flood evacuees in Kelantan and Terengganu has slightly decreased, bringing the total number of evacuees in nine flood-hit states to 138,052 as at 8am today compared to 140,896 last night.
