More relief centres open in Segamat as floods displace more than 800 people

JOHOR BARU: Another temporary relief centre has been opened up in Segamat as the district’s number of flood victims soars past 800 people.

The state disaster management committee said that some 19 individuals from seven families from Kampung Batu Bakar in Segamat have been relocated to the Taman Suria public hall.

“The latest relief centre was opened at around 9am on Monday (Dec 2) morning. This brings the total number of relief centres in Segamat to 18 because of the floods.

“As of 10am, the number of victims currently placed at these centres stands at 822 people from 233 families,” the statement read.

The committee also said that based on the latest Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) report, there was no warning of a thunderstorm happening on Monday (Dec 2) with all districts all over Johor expected to see good weather.

“However, water levels of Sungai Muar at three locations in Segamat have surpassed dangerous levels. The locations are Buloh Kasap, Kampung Awat and Kampung Tekam.

“Water levels of Sungai Tangkak and Sungai Kesang, both in Tangkak, have also reached warning level,” the statement added.
