IPOH: Nur Zawanie Muhd Zamrie fought to keep her brother's broken body alive minutes after he was run over by a senior police officer in his car, the High Court here was told.
The 29-year-old registered nurse said she performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on her brother - 17-year-old Muhammad Zaharif Affendi - while desperately waiting for paramedics to arrive.
"I had to call the ambulance a second time as it was delayed and my brother was writhing in pain and I saw blood flowing out of his nose.
"A few minutes later, Zaharif suddenly went silent and started blinking. I asked him not to sleep and asked him to wait a while for the ambulance to arrive.
"I checked his pulse and found that his pulse was getting weaker," she said when questioned by Deputy Public Prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz on Tuesday (Dec 3).
"Then, Zaharif began to relax his body and his legs straightened on their own while his eyes looked up before closing.
"I then continued to check Zaharif's pulse at his neck, wrists and between his thighs and found that Zaharif had no pulse and found that his pupils were dilated," she said.
She said that she performed CPR so that pressure on the chest could help pump blood out of the heart chambers and supply it to the rest of the body.
"I also performed it to avoid brain dead and organ failure," she added.
When cross-examined by defence lawyer M. Athimulan on the duration of the CPR that was performed, she said that she took around 2mins.
She added that in roughly less than 5mins, the ambulance arrived at the scene and two medical assistants (MA) immediately took over.
"After 20mins of CPR on Zaharif, the hospital MAs declared Zaharif as 'no pulse'. I also saw on the cardiac monitor that Zaharif no longer had a pulse," she added.
Deputy Supt Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak is charged with murdering Zaharif at the intersection of Jalan Taman Jati/Jalan Pekeliling Meru Indah, near SMK Jati, between 12.05pm and 12.40pm on Dec 15 last year.
The prosecution team includes Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, V. Suloshani and Low Qin Hui, while the defence team include former Perak police chief Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid and Aiman Hakim Kamaruzzaman.
The case is being heard before Justice Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gurcharan Singh Preet.
