GISB case: Jan 7 set to hear result of representations by childcare helper accused of hurting kids

SEREMBAN: The courts have fixed Jan 7 to hear the outcome of representations filed by lawyers for a 22-year-old childcare assistant, accused of using a hot metal spoon to cause burns and injuries on the arms of young girls.

In the first court, Sessions judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi allowed the extension after DPP Intan Noorashikin Nasarudin said her team had yet to get the result of the representation.

Puteri Nurin Amalina Ahmad Daud claimed trial on Sept 19 to four charges of causing injury to four girls aged five to six at a centre near here.

She allegedly committed the offences in August.

Puteri Nurin Amalina was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum 20-year jail term, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.

"I have been made to understand that the representation will be filed directly to the Attorney General's Chambers," said Boestamam Ahmad, who appeared for defence lawyer Doreena Abdullah.

In another court, Sessions judge Surita Budin also fixed Jan 7 after DPP Norazihah Asmuni said her team had not received the result of the representation.

Earlier, the courts had allowed the accused bail of RM80,000 for all four charges but she could not raise the amount.

She was then sent to the Sg Udang prison.

Puteri Nurin Amalina's case is related to the large-scale Ops Global carried out by the authorities in two states in September where hundreds of children were rescued from care homes linked to Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISB).

The initial raids were conducted at 18 care homes in Selangor and Negri Sembilan.

A total of 402 children, comprising 201 boys and 201 girls aged between one and 17, were rescued.

They were believed to be victims of abuse or abandoned.

A total of 171 suspects, aged between 17 and 64, were arrested, including a teacher and dormitory caretakers.
