Jan 15 mention date for case of religious teacher charged with child sexual assault


SEREMBAN: The Sessions Court here has fixed Jan 15 for mention of the case against a 43-year-old religious teacher charged with physical sexual assault on a child.

Judge Surita Budin set the date after DPP Nurul Balkis Zunaidi told the court that the related medical report was not ready.

Mohd Hafidz Eshak claimed trial to three charges on Sept 18.

He allegedly committed the offences against the girl in March, June and August this year at a house and a religious centre in Port Dickson.

The girl was 13 years and nine months old when the first offence was allegedly committed.

The accused, who was the chairman of the religious centre, was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years and caning upon conviction.

Mohd Hafidz is out on RM12,000 bail.

The accused was represented by Ardelliza Izmaryanti Shafie while Hanis Anisha Jamilludin from the Legal Aid Department appeared on behalf of the victim as her legal companion.

(A legal companion is a service provided to a child who has allegedly been victimised in a criminal sexual assault.)
