KUALA LUMPUR: The police are the bedrock of a nation’s growth and they must take a strong stance against any form of corruption or power abuse, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“It is undeniable that the police are the main pillar behind a nation’s security, which will act as a catalyst to the growth of the economy and investments.
“That is why, I’m asking the police, not just the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC), to take a strong stand,” said the Prime Minister when launching the IPCC, Police, Friends and Collaborators (IPFC) initiative at the World Trade Centre on Tuesday (Dec 3).
Anwar said that the people were demanding for a change and he was of the opinion that the people should not be focussing on trivial politics and racial or religious clashes.
To drive growth in Malaysia, Anwar said it was important for the country to be governed with integrity.
“Avoid wastage, arrogance, cruelty and oppression. Some tend to forget after they are in power, and they end up torturing certain people.
“Even though this consists of a small group. But, I stress that the police leadership cannot compromise on saving the people and the nation,” said Anwar.
At the same time, Anwar also said the civil service has played an important role in assisting flood victims during the monsoon season.
“Among the main pillars was the police, as they are large in numbers.
“The people, in general, will never forget their duties and service, where they had carried victims to relief centres together with the fire-and-rescue department, the civil defence department, and others,” added Anwar.
The IPFC is a programme under the IPCC to monitor the conduct of the police by creating a more effective complaints and investigations mechanism.
Through the IPFC, the IPCC said it aimed to encourage the cooperation of all various parties through engagement sessions, roundtable discussions, dialogues, and among others.
