PUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Idrus Harun has been appointed the new chairman of the Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC) for a three-year term, effective from Nov 25, 2024, to Nov 24, 2027.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali announced the appointment, which replaces Datuk Seri Mohd Hishamudin Md Yunus, who took on the role of chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) from July 3.
Armizan stated the appointment complies with Section 5(1)(a) of the Competition Commission Act 2010 [Act 713].
Expressing confidence in Idrus’ extensive experience and expertise, Armizan believes this will ensure the continued efforts of MyCC to strengthen its role as an agency under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living.
"I also hope that he will carry out the government’s reform agenda through the amendment of the Competition Act 2010 [Act 712] to further strengthen MyCC’s investigative and enforcement powers, including introducing a merger and acquisition regime to prevent the early formation of problematic cartels or monopolies,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 4).
Idrus, who holds a law degree from Universiti Malaya and boasts over 40 years of experience, has served in various key positions, including as attorney general.
Throughout his career, Idrus served as a law officer, Court of Appeal judge, and Federal Court judge. He was also appointed a member of the Judicial Appointments Commission on Nov 1.
Armizan extended his heartfelt appreciation to former MyCC chairman, Mohd Hishamudin, for his dedicated service and significant contributions to the commission and the nation during his tenure. – Bernama
