Japan's Aki Matsuri Festival to be celebrated in Penang on Dec 8


GEORGE TOWN: The Aki Matsuri Festival, which translates to Autumn Festival in Japanese, will be celebrated at Citadines Connect Georgetown at Lebuh Noordin on Sunday (Dec 8).

Malaysian-Japanese Society (MJS) president Choo Shing Lai said the event featuring an array of programmes would be held from 10am to 6pm.

"There will be over 25 stalls including those promoting Japanese food, handicraft, Yukata dressing, home decor and souvenirs.

"Visitors may participate in activities such as Yukata dressing experience, Origami and Kirigami workshops as well as information on tourism in Japan," he said during a press conference in Komtar on Tuesday (Dec 4).

Choo said the highlight of the event would be the opening ceremony at 2pm, which would feature a Taiko drum performance by students of the Penang Japanese School (PJS), followed by singing and choir, as well as Soran Bushi and Aki Matsuri dance performances.

"Not to be missed is a Yukata modeling and fashion show by 14 models of which some of the models are Miss Penang Bon Odori 2024 & Miss Aki Matsuri 2023," Choo said.

He added that the public also stand a chance to win lucky draw prizes from station games.

Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the Aki Matsuri Festival is a celebration that transcends borders and has brought the people together to celebrate the beauty of the changing seasons and the enduring spirit of cultural exchange.

"This event is a vibrant symbol of the enduring friendship and partnership between Malaysia and Japan.

"It's a testament to the power of culture, art, and community in bridging gaps and fostering understanding among diverse people.

"The Aki Matsuri Festival provides us with a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in the beauty of Japanese culture," he said.

Admission to the event is free.
