PETALING JAYA: Her house in Kelantan, built on high ground, was unaffected by the massive floods of 2014. But this time, the force of nature was greater.

Hanita Mohd Kamel, a teacher who lives in Melor, Kota Baru district, said, “My house literally became an island as we were completely cut off due to the floodwaters.

The three main roads connecting us to Melor town were inaccessible until Nov 30.”Her kitchen, Hanita added, was swamped, but her family could fortunately salvage their electrical appliances.

“The water started rising on the morning of Nov 27. Then it receded the next day, but on Nov 29, the rain was so heavy that the water started rising fast again,” she said when contacted.

Hanita, 50, said the water receded only days later.

“We were without electricity and clean water for four days,” she added.

Her agony isn’t over yet.

“Now, I am dreading what will come with the second wave, which is expected anytime. We are praying for the best. Come what may, we will accept our fate,” said Hanita, who lives with her mother.

Residents from Melor have taken to social media to highlight the severity of the floods.

A Facebook post by Marliza Mat Sidik on Nov 28 showed a video of Melor being completely flooded.

“From Melor to Kampung Tegayong to Kampung Bukit Hanyut, the flood has never been this bad,” she said.

Nik Mohd Zulkiflee from Kampung Sri Kulim in Melor said the residents are now bracing for the next wave amid ongoing clean-up work at homes and shophouses there. In a Facebook post, he said he had spent almost a week at an evacuation centre.

“Ready for the next wave,” he wrote.

On Sunday, the Kelantan government issued a warning of a possible second wave of floods beginning today.
