Over 31,000 civil servants chose early retirement over last two years, says Dr Zaliha


KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 31,481 civil servants opted for early retirement over the past two years, says Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

According to figures provided by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), the largest number of civil servants who took early retirement were those under 55, totalling 21,047 between 2022 and up to September of this year.

"In 2022, 979 civil servants under 50 took early retirement, while a total of 7,379 under 55 retired early," she said.

A total of 2,707 under 60 opted for early retirement.

"This meant that 11,065 civil servants opted for early retirement that year," she added in a written reply to Lee Chuan How (Pakatan-Ipoh Timur) in Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Dec 4).

Last year, she said that 1,166 civil servants under 50 took early retirement, while 8,099 under 55 retired early.

A total of 2,952 civil servants under 60 opted to retire early, she added.

She said this meant that the total number of early retirements among civil servants for 2023 was 12,217.

As of September this year, Dr Zaliha said that 826 civil servants under 50 opted for early retirement, while 5,469 under 55 did the same.

She added that 1,804 civil servants under 60 also took early retirement for the same period.

This brought the number of early retirements among civil servants to 8,199 for the same period, she said.
