KOTA KINABALU: Tun Richard Malanjum, the first Bornean to be chief justice of Malaysia, has been proposed as Sabah's next Yang di-Pertua Negeri or Tuan Yang Terutama (TYT).
Parti Warisan vice president Terence Siambun said Malanjum was known for his unwavering integrity, inclusivity, and respect for diversity, essential qualities for a unifying leader in that role.
He said Malanjum also had a track record of leadership marked by fairness and adherence to constitutional values and international experience as the Ombudsman of the United Nations Security Council.
"His tenure as chief justice demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fairness, equality, and upholding the Constitution," Siambun said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 4).
“His inclusive approach and dedication to preserving Sabah’s unique identity make him the ideal candidate to represent and unify our state."
He said Malanjum's leadership would not only strengthen Sabah’s social fabric but also enhance its commitment to progress and good governance.
Referring to concerns about the proposal undermining Islam’s position in Sabah, Siambun said Malanjum’s track record showed his respect for all faiths.
He added that Malanjum's advocacy for unity highlights his inclusive approach to leadership, fostering respect for all communities without compromising the position of Islam.
“These examples reaffirm that his appointment would preserve and strengthen the spirit of harmony and respect for Islam and all faiths in Sabah,” Siambun added.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has said the list of nominees for Sabah's next TYT would be submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong soon.
Speculation is mounting as to who will succeed current GovernorTun Juhar Mahiruddin, whose term ends on Dec 31.
Juhar has served three four-year terms since Jan 1, 2011, followed by a two-year extension from Jan 1 last year.
Some of the names being discussed are former chief ministers Tan Sri Musa Aman and Huguan Siou (paramount leader of the KadazandusunMurut communities) Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, former state minister Datuk Seri Nasir Sakaran, former state secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman, and former Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.
