CyberSecurity Malaysia has resolved 164 email scam cases, says minister

KUALA LUMPUR: CyberSecurity Malaysia has successfully resolved 164 cases of email scams and phishing, says Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

He told the Dewan Rakyat that these cases were resolved within 24 hours, as per the standard operating procedures.

"As of October, a total of 218 cases were recorded, while 164 of them were resolved by CyberSecurity Malaysia in 24 hours," he said in response to Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng (BN-Tanjung Piai) on Thursday (Dec 5) in Parliament.

Wee had asked the ministry to state its position on cases involving email and phishing scams and the efforts taken to address the problem.

Gobind said the ministry, through CyberSecurity Malaysia, had outlined several strategic initiatives focused on raising awareness against email data scams.

"The ministry is also collaborating with the private sector and cybersecurity experts in knowledge sharing, increasing threat intelligence, and developing innovative solutions to address data phishing," he added.

He said organisations would also be audited regarding their cybersecurity measures, while international collaborations were sought for best practices.

"The amendments on the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, which was gazetted on Oct 17, was also an initiative of the ministry to control email scams, including data phishing.

Among the factors that led to the email scams was the breach of personal data due to a lack of awareness," he added.
