KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has partnered with Special Olympics Sabah to improve the welfare and health of intellectually challenged individuals in the state.
The collaboration was formalised through a letter of intent (LOI) signing ceremony between UMS' Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (FPSK) and Special Olympics Sabah.
This partnership will focus on addressing the health disparities faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities by collaborating on clinical services, community programmes, and educational initiatives.
In his speech, FPSK dean Datuk Dr Mohd Yusof Ibrahim emphasised the importance of the partnership in ensuring access to quality healthcare and raising awareness about inclusive practices in health sciences.
"This collaboration reflects the spirit of Malaysia Madani by ensuring that educational and health institutions work together to create an inclusive ecosystem for all, especially for marginalised groups.
"It also reflects UMS' vision to serve the community and ensure that individuals with intellectual disabilities receive equitable healthcare opportunities.
"Through joint efforts in education, training, and research, we aim to build a more inclusive society," he said.
Special Olympics Sabah chairman Dr Jiloris Julian Frederick Dony said the cooperation further strengthens their mission, particularly in empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to lead healthier and more meaningful lives.
"We are very excited to work closely with UMS to bring about impactful changes to the community," he said.
The key areas of collaboration outlined in the LOI include health screening and services, training and capacity-building, as well as research and innovation.
The collaboration is expected to pave the way for high-impact initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.
