Flood situation continues to improve in Malaysia


KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in the country continued to improve as the number of flood evacuees in relief centres dropped steadily, with Terengganu fully recovering from flooding.

In KELANTAN, the number of evacuees dropped to 7,600 people from 2,349 families at 20 centres as of 8pm compared to 12,736 people this afternoon, with Tumpat having the highest number of evacuees at 7,052 people (2,188 families) followed by Pasir Mas 526 people (154 families) and Kuala Krai with 22 people (seven families).

The Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) said that only the water level of Sungai Golok in Tumpat had exceeded danger levels but had dropped to 3.20 metres (m) from 3.24 metres this afternoon.

In KEDAH, evacuees dropped to 2,131 people from 642 families in 14 centres in two districts as of 8pm compared to 2,861 people from 850 families this afternoon, with Kota Setar having the highest number, 1,794 people from 544 families in 11 centres followed by Kubang Pasu with 337 people from 98 families in three centres.

In PAHANG, the number of evacuees dropped to 13 people from four families at Balairaya Kampung Baru Pertanian, Maran as of 8pm compared to 15 people this afternoon, while the water levels of all major rivers in the state were normal.

The number of evacuees dropped as well in JOHOR, with 620 people from 178 families as of 8pm compared to 811 people this afternoon, while the number of relief centres that are open was 16 in three districts.

A total of 32 people from 10 families are at one relief centre in Batu Pahat, 412 people from 120 families are in 13 centres in Segamat, while the situation remained the same in Tangkak with 176 people from 48 families in two centres.

Only one river in Segamat was reported to have exceeded danger levels, the Sungai Muar station in Jeti Kampung Tekam with a reading of 4.7 m while there is good weather reported in eight districts in Johor, while Muar and Batu Pahat are forecasted to be cloudy tonight.

Two roads in Segamat are still closed to all traffic due to floods, Jalan Kuala Paya-Balai Badang and Jalan Tumang, while Jalan Serakek is only open to heavy vehicles.

In PERAK, the number of evacuees remained the same at 129 people from 43 families in three centres in two districts as of 8pm, with 95 people from 32 families from Kampung Tanjung Tin, Kampung Pasir and Kampung Sikh at two centres in Kinta district, and 34 evacuees from 11 families from Kampung Pulau Misa in one centre in Perak Tengah district.

Finally, in MELAKA, the number of evacuees remained the same at 134 people from 34 families as of 8pm, with 103 people from 25 families being sheltered at SK Parit Penghulu and 31 people from nine families at SK Seri Mendapat. - Bernama
