Reward teachers in Sarawak with free air tickets, state govt urged

SIBU: The Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) has proposed that the Sarawak government grant all teachers in the state a free air ticket annually as a gesture of appreciation.

"I urge the state government to provide free flight tickets to teachers serving in Sarawak as a token of appreciation for their contributions.

"As a proud Sarawakian, I am thrilled that Sarawak will be the only state in Malaysia with its own airline," said STU deputy president Yong Sie Hing during the STU Sibu Division Retirement Ceremony 2024 on Saturday (Dec 7).

The Sarawak government plans to set up its own boutique airline following the acquisition of MASwings, expected to be finalised by year-end.

The new airline, to be named later, is expected to be operational in 2025.

Yong said this proposal recognises the unwavering commitment of teachers in Sarawak to the various state educational initiatives including the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English under the Dual Language Programme (DLP), the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, and the upcoming standardised assessment for DLP students starting next year.

Yong, who is also the chairman of Sibu Division STU, highlighted that teachers in Sarawak consistently support educational reforms in the state and should be recognised for their efforts.

Additionally, Yong proposed that Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek introduce a Special Travel Warrant for teachers, allowing them one travel package during their service.

"A travel package for teachers, along with their families, would be a meaningful reward for their dedication, either before or after retirement," he added.

He also called on Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing to negotiate with airlines to provide a 50% discount on air tickets for teachers, given the high costs, especially during school holidays.

"Representing over 20,000 STU members, we request Tiong’s assistance in securing a discount. While free tickets might not be feasible, a 50% reduction would suffice," Yong added.

Yong said that retired teachers should also be included in these benefits, aligning with STU’s principle: "Once a teacher, forever a teacher."

"Retired teachers deserve the same privileges and recognition that active teachers receive," he added.
