Caretaker suspected of rape held

KULAI: The caretaker of an orphanage has been arrested for allegedly raping an underaged resident over a period of two years.

Kulai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Seng Lee said the 59-year-old man was believed to have raped the girl at the private orphanage when she was between 13 and 15 years old.

“Initial investigation shows that the girl, who is now 17, was raped between 2020 and 2022.

“She was believed to have been raped by a local man, who is the caretaker of the orphanage where she was a resident,” he said in a statement on Friday night.

ACP Tan said a police report was lodged at 9.48pm on Nov 29.

“Following the report, a raid was conducted at about 3am on Nov 30 at a house. The man was arrested,” he said.

ACP Tan said the suspect is being remanded until Tuesday to assist in the investigation under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years with whipping.

In an unrelated case, Johor Baru North OCPD Balveer Singh said the police have arrested a teenager in connection with a baby dumping case at a mall in Johor Baru.

He said the baby was found by a cleaner in the washroom of the mall with his umbilical cord still attached at 4.51pm on Thursday.

“An individual filed a police report after the cleaner found the baby. The infant was covered in blood.

“Following the report, we arrested a 19-year-old female in Tampoi at 8.40pm the same day,” he said in a statement.

OCPD Balveer said that the police are also tracking down a Malaysian man to assist in the investigation under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandoning a child.

“The baby boy is in stable condition and has been sent to Hospital Sultanah Aminah for further medical examination,” he said.
