Four individuals arrested for illegally crossing border at Sungai Golok

PASIR MAS: Four individuals were arrested for illegally crossing the Thailand-Malaysia border at Sungai Golok since enforcement began on Dec 1.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said two Malaysian and two Thai citizens, aged 33 to 50, were arrested, reported Sinar Harian.

"They used an illegal port in Sungai Golok to enter the country on Saturday (Dec 6)."

"The arrests of a woman and three men were made at separate locations," he said during a press conference at the Repek Police Station here on Sunday (Dec 7).

He said all suspects were remanded for four days since Saturday.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 6 (1) of the Immigration Act and Section 5 (2) of the Immigration Act.

Ayob Khan said he was aware of the dissatisfaction expressed by some regarding the ban on crossing the border using illegal ports at Sungai Golok.

"This issue (of illegal border crossing) has persisted for a long time, and now we are taking action. We are taking action and enforcing existing laws so that this does not continue," Ayob Khan said.

He is confident that there would be more attempts to sneak into the country illegally.

Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat had previously said that the police would not compromise with any individual who crosses the Sungai Golok via illegal means starting Dec 1.

"We remain firm in our stance as the authorities to proceed on that date under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 (Act 155)," he said.
