PETALING JAYA: A total of 25 bank accounts have been frozen by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) following investigations into construction projects worth about RM250mil in Sarawak, said Tan Sri Azam Baki.
The MACC chief commissioner also said that 21 individuals have been called in to give their statements to the MACC following the arrest of a senior civil servant and a company director with the “Datuk” title.
"We have obtained a three-day extension order against the senior civil servant," he said.
"As for the company director who was also detained, the court rejected our bid for an extension of his remand. Investigations are still ongoing as our probe just started last Thursday," added Azam on Monday (Dec 9).
Last Thursday, the senior civil servant officer and director, aged between 40 and 50, were detained by the MACC and remanded for five days to facilitate investigations.
The two suspects are believed to have colluded and conspired to enable several companies to obtain construction projects issued by a district public works office in Sarawak between 2022 and 2024, worth about RM250mil.
Meanwhile, Azam said the exact amount of money involved could not be ascertained at the moment.
"The sum of the projects was said to be about RM250mil and I cannot say how much was involved although investigations are on corruption. However, RM40,000 in cash was seized from the civil servant in question," he added.
He also said that 25 bank accounts have since been frozen to facilitate investigations.
