JASIN: The family of the taxi driver who died in an accident on Nov 28 in Kampung Lancang, Merlimau, has begun receiving benefits under the Employment Injury Scheme from the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso).
S. Subramaniam, 71, and two passengers perished in the accident after the taxi he was driving skidded, hit a bridge wall and caught fire.
His son, S. Saravanan, 38, said the Dependents' Benefit scheme, received by his mother, K. Pachaiyamah, 74, has helped ease their burden and cover her medical costs. Pachaiyamah is suffering from heart disease.
According to him, his late father, a taxi driver for over 30 years, would leave the house early in the morning to work despite being asked by his children to stop working and rest.
"...my late father still insisted on going to work because he was accustomed to his job," he said.
"We are deeply saddened but accept the fact that he is gone. The money received will be used wisely for my mother's expenses, and we are also grateful to Perkeso and other parties who have provided much help," he told reporters at Taman Muhibbah, Merlimau on Tuesday (Dec 10).
Earlier, Melaka Skuad Perkeso Prihatin and Melaka Perkeso director Nur Mohammad Bakhtiar Mohamad Akhir visited Pachaiyamah to present the contribution.
The late Subramaniam was an active contributor to Perkeso's Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS), allowing his wife to receive RM837 per month under the Dependent's Benefit scheme and the Funeral Benefit of RM3,000.
Meanwhile, Nur Mohammad Bakhtir said the late Subramaniam also contributed to Perkeso under the state government's sponsorship since 2017, which entitles his beneficiaries to receive a lifetime benefit.
"We would also like to advise the public, especially those on self-employment in any field, to make contributions through the SKSPS to ensure a more secure future for their families," he said. – Bernama
