KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 7,304 flood evacuees were found to be suffering from acute respiratory infection following health screenings at flood relief centres nationwide, says Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
The Health Minister said the discovery was made following the screening of 34,503 flood evacuees seeking temporary shelter at flood relief centres nationwide recently.
"The health screening was carried out by over 1,000 health officers in a two-week period between Nov 27 and Dec 9," he told reporters as a press conference after launching the International Medical Device Exhibition and Conference 2024 here on Tuesday (Dec 10).
Besides this, he said that 317 flood evacuees were found to be suffering from acute gastroenteritis, also known as infectious diarrhea or stomach flu.
He added that 197 evacuees had contracted conjunctivitis while 20 others had chicken pox.
He also said that hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) were detected among child evacuees.
"Also two evacuees were tested positive for Covid-19.
"They have been isolated according to procedures and treated for their illness," he added.
Dr Dzulkefly said that no cases of meningitis, leptospirosis, typhoid or other infectious disease were detected during the screenings.
