Anwar urges international community to reaffirm UN's principles of justice, equality

KUALA LUMPUR: It is high time the international community reaffirm the foundational principles of justice and equality that underpin the United Nations, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister when speaking at the Strategic Vision Group: Russia-Islamic World forum highlighted the global silence on issues such as the plight of Palestine.

Anwar questioned the disconnect between the United Nation’s original mission and the world’s current tolerance for colonial practices.

“The United Nations was created to oppose colonialism, yet today the world seems to condone and accept colonialism.

“In Palestine, their properties are plundered, their wealth squandered and their lands and lives stolen. The global silence on this is deafening,” he said in his speech here on Wednesday (Dec 11).

He called on the international community to restore the moral fabric that has deteriorated over decades, arguing that the world’s failure to address the suffering of Palestinians reflects a broader erosion of justice.

Anwar criticised the hypocrisy of nations that advocate for human rights and democracy while overlooking such blatant violations.

“Why speak about morality and human rights when such injustices are ignored? There is a clear disconnect between what is preached and what is practised,” he said.

He emphasised the need for collective action among nations to realign global governance with the United Nation’s original principles.

“It is essential to return to the foundational values of justice and equality to restore trust and accountability on the world stage,” he added.
