National Ageing Blueprint set for MTEN presentation next year

KUALA LUMPUR: A draft of the National Ageing Blueprint will be presented to the National Economic Council (MTEN) early next year, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

The Economy Ministry said various studies were conducted to develop the blueprint, which aims to address Malaysia's fast-approaching aged nation status.

"The blueprint will comprise policy planning, frameworks, and action plans across various sectors, including macroeconomy, fiscal, employment, skills and education, social security, and lifelong health."

"The research findings and draft of the National Ageing Blueprint will be presented to MTEN, chaired by the Prime Minister, in early 2025," it said in a written reply on Wednesday (Dec 11).

It said the government is optimistic that its preparations will ensure it can tackle challenges faced by ageing societies more efficiently, adding that Malaysia is set to reach this status by 2043.

The ministry attributed the changing demographics to two factors: the dropping fertility rate and the increase in Malaysians' life expectancy from 71.2 years in 1991 to 74.8 years in 2023.

It was responding to a question by Zahari Kechik (IND-Jeli), who asked about the ministry’s action plan ahead of Malaysia becoming an aged nation.
