KLANG: Nearly RM1mil in suspected smuggled diesel and assets were seized in an early morning raid at the Bagan Hailam jetty here.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry enforcement director Datuk Azman Adam said the raid was conducted together with district police on Dec 12 at around 3am.

The raid was the culmination of a two-month surveillance after an investigation into suspected diesel smuggling.

“The raiding team arrested five men, of whom four are foreigners. They have been detained to assist investigations,” he said.

Furthermore, the supposed owner of the ship also presented himself to the ministry during an inspection of the ship.

“However, he failed to present any documentation or licences related to the diesel trade,” Azman said.

Diesel was also seized on board the ship and in supply tanks around the jetty, leading to around RM900,000 in seizures.

“It is believed that the suspects conducted their operations at night. As of now, we are still investigating the source and final destination of the fuel,” he said.

In an unrelated matter, ongoing operations against the smuggling of controlled goods under the Ops Tiris 3.0 umbrella have seen 16,876 inspections between Jan 1 and Dec 10.
