PONTIAN: PKR has not received any application from International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz to join the party, says party information chief Fahmi Fadzil (pic).
The Communications Minister added that he met Tengku Zafrul during the Cabinet meeting on Friday (Dec 13) but did not have the chance to ask him about the matter.
"I only read about it in media reports. Yesterday, I did not have the opportunity to ask Tengku Zafrul directly.
"He attended the Cabinet meeting, but the matter was not discussed there. It was only reported in the media," he said.
He made these remarks when speaking to reporters after visiting Dewan Masyarakat Kampung Seri Bunian to oversee the proof of concept of the Tarana Wireless telecommunication tower on Saturday (May 10).
He added that PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh also confirmed that no application had been submitted.
When asked about the possibility of Tengku Zafrul receiving a special pathway into the party due to his ministerial position, Fahmi dismissed the idea.
"I don't think there's usually any special pathway. His journey will be full of challenges, and we want to see if he can conduct a demonstration or face 'tear gas'," he quipped.
On a separate matter, Fahmi announced that the PKR National Congress 2024, initially planned for December, has been postponed to the second quarter of 2025 due to ongoing floods in Johor.
"We will still hold the congress in Johor, but the date will likely be after the northeast monsoon season," he said.
Fahmi explained that holding a congress while the floods affect many people was not deemed appropriate.
Additionally, Fahmi stated that the PKR special congress on Dec 15 will focus solely on amendments to the party’s Constitution.
"The special congress will address only one agenda, namely reviewing the amendments to the party’s Constitution. No other issues will be raised," he added.
The PKR National Congress 2024 was initially scheduled for Dec 15 at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre, Johor Baru.
