Crocodile kills man in Sandakan

KOTA KINABALU: A 28-year-old foreign national was killed by a crocodile while crossing a wooden bridge towards his brother's house at Batu 8, Sandakan on Friday (December 13) night.

Acting Sandakan District Police Chief Supt Ramasamy Kuppan said the incident occurred at 8.20pm, and the public became aware after hearing the victim's cries for help.

Villagers reported that the sea was at high tide at the time, and the victim, who worked at a market in town, was carrying a package of fish home.

"The victim’s remains were found by family members about an hour later, just two metres from where the attack happened," he said in a statement on Sunday (December 15).

There were bite marks on the victim's right thigh and back.

The crocodile is believed to have bitten the victim’s right thigh before dragging him underwater for approximately 15 minutes.

The victim resurfaced, and villagers managed to pull him ashore, but despite attempts to revive him, their efforts were unsuccessful.

Ramasamy said a post-mortem will be carried out on the body, and the case has been classified as sudden death.
