Current National Service allowance to remain, says Defence Minister


KOTA TINGGI: There is no need to discuss the daily allowance for the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0 for now, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Defence Minister said that the daily allowance rate for PLKN 3.0 trainees will remain at RM8 per day for the time being.

"It will stay as it is for now. The programme has not even started yet, and there are already talks about allowances.

Let the programme run first," he said during a press conference after officiating the Kampung Angkat Madani programme at Felda Kampung Baru Pasak.

He was responding to the Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) on Security’s suggestion to increase the daily allowance rate from RM8 to RM50.

On Thursday (December 12), the committee released a full report on the programme in the Dewan Rakyat.

Among other recommendations, the PSSC proposed increasing the trainees' daily allowance from RM8 to RM50, citing the rising cost of living.

Khaled also expressed confidence that there would not be any issues with bullying in PLKN 3.0, which is scheduled to begin in January next year.

"We will ensure that the implementation of PLKN 3.0 does not exceed two months. It will last for about 45 days. As such, we believe such issues can be managed effectively. Additionally, we plan to install closed-circuit television (CCTV), among other measures," he added.
