SHAH ALAM: Top PKR leaders will now be elected by party delegates instead of through the one-member-one-vote concept, said G. Manivanan.
The PKR central leadership council member explained that while division-level elections will still follow the one-member-one-vote system, the process for electing the party’s top leadership has been amended.
“Previously, for division-level elections, we used the one-member-one-vote method, and the same was applied to the president, deputy president and vice-presidents.
“However, the central leadership council members were elected by delegates,” he said when met at the PKR congress held at Dewan Raja Muda Musa here yesterday.
“With this amendment, the election of the top leaders – president, deputy president and vice-presidents – will now also follow the delegates concept.
“From now on, only delegates will vote for the top leaders, while the one-member-one-vote system will remain for division-level elections,” Manivanan added.
Meanwhile, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said the amendments reflect the party’s adherence to key democratic principles, including representative and proportional democracy.“We adhere to the principles of representative and proportional democracy, as well as professional representation, ensuring the process is orderly and properly managed.
“We need to ensure everything is done in an orderly fashion, and I think that’s what was achieved today,” she said, adding that the amendments are aimed at ensuring the best framework for the party’s election process.
The delegate-based voting system is prevalent among major Malaysian political parties, including Umno and Bersatu.
This approach involves party delegates casting votes to elect top leadership positions, rather than employing a one-member-one-vote system.
This method is designed to streamline the election process and ensure that elected leaders have the confidence of key party representatives.
