Firefighters assist in handling burial of 420kg man

KOTA BARU: The Kelantan branch of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department assisted in the burial arrangements of a 420kg man who passed away at his home in Pasir Hor here on Sunday.

According to Sinar Harian, Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department’s Assistant Director of Operations, Mohd Wildan Azhari, said that the department provided a five-tonne lorry and a modified trolley to handle and transport the body of the late Sheikh Mohd Ali Omar, 44.

"I’ve met with the family and discussed that the fire department is ready to assist in managing this burial.

"For the ritual washing of the deceased, the family has informed us that they are waiting for an NGO (non-governmental organisation) from Setiu, Terengganu, to carry it out," he said when met at the late Sheikh Mohd Ali’s home in Kampung Pasir Hor on Sunday (Dec 15).

According to him, a total of 15 personnel from the Pasir Tumboh and Tunjong Fire and Rescue Stations, along with the Rapid Response Team, will be involved in the burial arrangements.

"We will add more personnel if needed and are waiting for updates from the family. Once the body has been washed and funeral prayers performed, it will then be buried," he said.

Earlier, it was reported that the family had appealed for assistance in handling the burial of Sheikh Mohd Ali.

The deceased’s sister, Hanoraziah Hassan, 60, said her brother was initially rescued by firefighters after being trapped in the bathroom. However, shortly after, he became weak and short of breath before passing away.

Sheikh Mohd Ali also suffered from gout.

"The death certificate has been completed with police verification, and we are now managing the burial with help from the fire department, the NGO, and local villagers," she said.

The burial will be held at the Kampung Jaya Cemetery, near the late Sheikh Mohd Ali’s home.
