BUTTERWORTH: First-time competing duo Moses Mbugen Gaikabira, 37, and Rita Septoo, 36, from Kenya won the full marathon in the men’s and women’s categories of the Penang Bridge International Marathon.
In high spirits after the marathon yesterday, they said it was the best Christmas present of the year and added that they look forward to spending the prize money with their families back home.
“I guess it was my first-time lucky,” said Septoo, while Gaikabira, who came second in the Kuching Marathon earlier this year, added, “I finally made it.”
The run kicked off at 1.30am with Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow flagging off the full marathon (42km), which saw 4,202 participants joining.
He then flagged off the half marathon (21km), which had 9,284 participants, at 3.30am and the 10km run (open/junior run) at 6am with 8,536 runners.
More than 22,000 runners from 65 countries registered for the event this year, held for the first time at Batu Kawan with runners having to cross the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Second Bridge.
In his speech, Chow said the marathon has put Penang on the international map, attracting participants worldwide and allowing them to enjoy Penang’s vibrant culture and stunning vistas.
“It’s more than just a race. In fact, it’s a celebration of health, resilience and the spirit of togetherness, which enhances Penang’s reputation as a global sporting and cultural destination,” he added.
The event highlights included musical performances and cultural shows, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display before the start of the full marathon.
Participants also had a chance to win exciting prizes in a lucky draw, including two cars (a Myvi 1.3G ASA Auto and an Axia 1.0G) and three motorcycles (SM Sport 110E).
