‘Yes, there was a discussion’

PETALING JAYA: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz (pic) confirmed that there had been an initial discussion with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim over the former’s future political direction.

However, Tengku Zafrul emphasised that no decision has been made yet.

He also dismissed claims that the discussion involved giving him a position at state level or to hold any by-election.

He believed it is an individual’s right to choose one’s political path.

“An individual cannot give the best service if there is no compatibility with the rest,” he said in a statement yesterday night.

The Umno supreme council member added that he would formally inform his party leadership should any decision be made.

“I have not made any decision regarding the membership of any party, although, as mentioned by the Prime Minister, there have been discussions about this with the relevant parties.

“I adhere to the principle that when I make a decision, I will certainly do it with proper etiquette and formally inform the leadership of my party,” he added.

The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said that he had left his corporate roles and joined the administration of the government to fulfil his belief to serve the rakyat through the national development agenda.

“I believe the people of Malaysia are fed up with petty and unhealthy politics.

“Many are aware that I have raised these issues before in Selangor Umno, but unfortunately, these issues remained in the party,” he added.

Tengku Zafrul said that as a member of the unity government, he strove for politics that focused on service to the people and nation-building

Earlier, Anwar had confirmed that there were discussions about the possibility of Tengku Zafrul joining his party.

Anwar said that PKR has always maintained an open-door policy, allowing for healthy dialogue and inclusivity in its membership.

In April, Tengku Zafrul quit as Selangor Umno treasurer, citing differences of opinion and lack of direction.
