Former chief minister to serve as Governor from Jan 1, 2025


KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Musa Aman has been appointed the 11th Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, presented Musa with the instrument of appointment in a ceremony at Istana Negara yesterday.

Musa, 73, was appointed the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah by Article 1 of the Sabah Constitution for four years effective Jan 1, 2025 until Dec 31, 2028.

The former chief minister replaces Tun Juhar Mahiruddin whose term expires on Dec 31 after holding the post since Jan 1, 2011.

At the ceremony, Musa was conferred the Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara award which carries the title “Tun”.

The ceremony was also attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

Also present were Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, Dewan Negara President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedict, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

Born on March 30, 1951 in Beaufort, Musa graduated with a Master’s in Business Administration from Edith Cowan University, Australia.

He took office as the 14th Chief Minister of Sabah on March 27, 2003, replacing Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat and held the post for five terms until May 12, 2018, making him the longest-serving Sabah chief minister.

Meanwhile, Musa expressed gratitude to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for consenting to present him with the instrument of appointment, Bernama reported.

The newly-appointed Yang di-Pertua Negeri received congratulatory messages, including from the Prime Minister, who hoped the former’s service and years of experience would benefit the public, especially the people of Sabah.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also congratulated Musa, hoping that the appointment would bring greater success, well-being and prosperity not just to the people and Sabah, but also to the whole nation.

Hajiji congratulated Musa on his appointment and hoped that the latter would provide his service in developing Sabah.

The Chief Minister also expressed his highest appreciation to Juhar for 14 years of service.

“My highest appreciation to Tun Juhar for his dedication and service as the longest-serving Yang di-Pertua Negeri.

“On behalf of the government and people of Sabah, I wish to express our highest appreciation and gratitude to him,” he said.
