Man suffers serious injuries in house fire

KOTA KINABALU: A man sustained serious burns on his body as he tried to escape from his burning house.

Woo Chee Ke, 54, lived on the first floor of an apartment unit in Kolombong near here and is believed to have been sleeping when he woke up due to the heat and smoke.

Lintas Fire Station chief Agustavia Joe Guasi said they received a distress call about the incident at around 12.49am yesterday and a team was sent to the location.

“Our team arrived at the scene at around 12.53am, and the fire was brought under control at 1.12am,” she said.

She said the victim ran out of his burning unit and sustained burns covering about 80% of his body, while 20% of the apartment was damaged.

“He was immediately taken to the hospital for emergency treatment,” said Agustavia.

She added that Woo’s condition is still unstable.

She said the cause of the incident is being investigated.
